1. BHARATNATYAM

This is one of the most  popular classical dances of India.The origin of this dance  is Southern India. It was widely performed in the Temples of Tamil Nadu. It was created to personify celestial relationship and expression of the world.

2. KATHAK

The origin of this dance is Northern India. Kathak comes from the word “Katha” which denotes “Telling a story”. It is a beautiful form of dance where a storyteller narrates the story through facial expressions, hand gestures and postures accompanying the rhythmic movements of the instruments.

3. KATHAKALI

Kathakali is one of the most dramatic dance forms of India. It is a traditional dance of the state of Kerala. The amazing costumes and elaborate make up of the dancers is one of the most extraordinary feature of this dance. The hand gestures called ” Mudras” and the expressions through eyes is the most important aspect of this dance. This dance form is highly religious in nature. One of the significant point is that earlier it was performed by male only. The female characters were also played by male dressed as female. However, now a days the women were also allowed to dance the same.

4. KUCHIPUDI

Kuchipudi is one of the most unique dance forms of Southern India. The origin of the name derived from a place called Kuchelapuram in Andhra Pradesh. The uniqueness of this dance is its rhythm, the fast footwork and the strong and clean lines in the postures.

5. MANIPURI

This beautiful dance form is originated from the State Of Manipur. This form of dance has very soft and graceful moves. The foot and body make very gentle moves with the beautiful rhythmic music. This dance is also very devotional in nature. The life of Radha and Krishna is depicted in the famous Manipuri  “Ras Leela” dance.

6. MOHINIYATTYAM

This dance is also originated in Kerala. This dance is performed by women only. This was a temple dance performed by the Devadashis. The movements of this dance are very elegant and soft. The expressions and mudras are very important in this dance form.

7. ODISSI

Odissi is one of the oldest surviving dance forms of India. This dance is originated in the Temples of Orissa is believed to have performed by the Devadasis. Like most of the dance forms of India, Odissi is also religious in nature and revolves around Lord Krishna.

8. SATTRIYA

This inspirational dance form is originated from Assam. This dance form was introduced by Mahapurush Srimanta Sankaradev, one of the greatest reformists of Assam on 15th century as a medium for Vaishnava faith. The dance mainly depicts mythological stories .Originally this dance was performed exclusively by male on stage. However now a days females are allowed to perform.

9.CHHAU

The origin of this dance form is still a mystery and so is the origin of its name Chhau. Related to the name Chhau, there are many versions such as Shadow, disguise etc. One of the main characteristic features of this dance is extensive use of the Mask. This dance is based on vigorous movements, leaps and it almost looks like martial art.The Theme of this dance includes mythological heroes  such as Mahadeva, Parasurama etc . The Characters of epics Mahabharata and Ramayana are also included.

10. YAKSHAGANA

This unique theater style dance form has resemblance to the opera of the Western world. This is one of the ancient dance forms, which is widely enjoyed by people from various sectors of the society irrespective of gender, class, caste. This is one of the antique dance forms of rural Karnataka. The meaning of Yakshagana is the song of the natural spirits . This is a combination of dance, music, dialogue ,performance, makeup and costume. The movements of this dance is very dramatic, graceful and rhythmic.
